Engage 2 aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia, investigate the future of ATM including the needed skills, as well as inspire and support the next generation of aviation professionals in facing the challenges of the digital era. By forging strong alliances between research and operational implementation, Engage 2 will foster cross-fertilization of knowledge by drawing from other disciplines and encouraging innovative, future-oriented, and unconventional research within the domain of ATM.
Engage 2 aims to inspire, educate, and transform the next generation of aviation professionals, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to thrive in the digital era. By forging strong alliances between research and operational implementation, Engage 2 will foster cross-fertilization of knowledge by drawing from other disciplines and encouraging innovative, future-oriented, and unconventional research within the domain of ATM.
A central focus will be the further development of the ATM concepts roadmap, which will serve as a core element of the Engage wiki—a valuable resource for the aviation community. This collaborative effort will strengthen the ties between cutting-edge research and the operational challenges faced by SESAR.
The Thematic Challenges will help to identify important fields of interest in the ATM domain, which will support the call for PhDs and the call for Catalyst Project funding. Both will be launched by Engage 2 in the upcoming months.
Thematic challenges, which embrace both applied and exploratory research, will be defined in collaboration with the KTN industry partners and through proposals received. Each thematic challenge will have one or more dedicated thematic workshop(s), and dedicated session(s) at the SESAR Innovation Days will also be organised (selecting the best work from the workshops). The Thematic Challenges might also have influence on upcoming Exploratory Calls, if they turn out to be of high relevance.
You are entirely free to make any proposal you consider appropriate
Examples of previous thematic challenges can be found here.
Please submit your proposal of a Thematic Challenge through the form below or with an email to [email protected] (please include “Engage 2 – Thematic Challenge” in your topic line of the email). Please find here the form: you can download it, fill it and then send it via email.
The description of the Challenge should be done with 500 words max. Please describe the challenge itself including (if available) past approaches and why they may have failed supported by relevant literature.
Defining the Thematic Challenges
Engage 2 through its different interactions will help to identify new ideas, not already included within the scope of an existing SESAR project, to bring changes in the ATM landscape. This call for Thematic Challenges, combining applied and exploratory research, will give the community the chance to participate in the identification of crucial challenges in ATM setting the stage for new topics in the future SESAR calls. The Thematic Challenges embrace both applied and exploratory research with a focus on current and future operational challenges. Thematic challenges will be defined based on the proposals received below in a collaborative effort of the partners of Engage 2 in consultation with the SESAR 3 JU. Each thematic challenge will have one or more dedicated thematic workshop(s). Furthermore, dedicated session(s) at the SESAR Innovation Days will also be organised (e.g. building on the best work from the workshops). Three to five thematic challenges will be running at any one time, and may be adapted and refined during the lifecycle of the KTN (e.g. some could be replaced by new ones). The first announcement of selected challenges will be made in autumn 2023, with workshops being organised from January 2024 onwards.
Thematic workshops supporting the challenges
Each thematic workshop will last one day, organised by the consortium members with those proposing the corresponding thematic challenge and, potentially, with (other) KTN industry partners and external/interdisciplinary experts. The workshops are fully open to anyone interested in the thematic challenge, particularly welcoming delegates and students from outside the consortium, and will be free of charge to attend. The workshops will have a strong emphasis on discussion regarding the maturing of the challenges, with facilitated discussion, rather than simply packing in a series of presentations. If you would like to host a workshop associated with your proposed thematic challenge, please indicate this below. Attendance is expected to be around 30 participants, with some budget available from the network for catering and external/interdisciplinary experts and speakers. No budget is available for room hire or equipment. Please note that indicating that you are unable to host a workshop will not affect the selection of the thematic challenge you propose. If you are unable to host a workshop, or prefer not to, a consortium member will gladly host it for you. We will also write up and disseminate a public report afterwards.
Questionnaire – Major technological transformations in aviation industry
Engage 2 has developed a brief questionnaire to collect inputs from industry partners and give them the opportunity to outline their view on future trends and developments in aviation.
The nine consortium members have extensive experience in applied research and exploratory research. Moreover, stretching back over a decade, all the partners have already established good working relationships thanks to multiple collaboration in EU funded projects.
With all the identity foreseen in the project (e.g. Academia, Industry and Research) present among all the partners, Engage 2 Consortium is well balanced to achieve all the project’s objectives.
Autumn 2023
Engage 2 project has received funding from the SESAR Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101114648.
